covid 19 vaccine booking

Gordons Chemists are Northern Ireland’s leading independent Community Pharmacy chain. We’re pleased to continue the fight against Covid-19 by making the Covid-19 Vaccination available to eligible patients, in many of our pharmacies.

The eligible age cohort has changed on 27th May 2021 – now all members of the public and health care professionals aged 18 years and over can receive a COVID-19 vaccination at participating community pharmacies.

Your vaccinator or pharmacist will ask for photographic proof of identity and proof of eligibility.

Please note that Community Pharmacy can only administer the Oxford/AstraZeneca Vaccine. Patients aged 39 years and younger should read below* to ensure they make an informed decision to receive this vaccine.

Latest advice from the JCVI (Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation):

In light of the limited number of appointments available each week in Trust vaccination centres for patients seeking first doses of the Pfizer vaccine, the Department of Health have clarified that individuals aged 18 to 39 years who wish to make an informed decision to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine can be vaccinated through the community pharmacy service.

The JCVI’s updated advice relates to reports of extremely rare adverse events of concurrent thrombosis (blood clots) and thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) following vaccination with the first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine. To date 10.5 events have occurred per million doses, or 0.00105% prevalence.

Updated Advice:

Patients aged 39 years or younger, and who are not in a clinical priority group at higher risk of severe COVID-19 disease, should be preferentially offered an alternative to the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, where possible and only where no substantial delay or barrier in access to vaccination would arise.

JCVI have further explained that those aged under 40 may still make an informed choice to receive the Astra Zeneca vaccine, for instance where someone has an appointment booked for vaccination in the coming days and may prefer not to reschedule and wait to receive an alternative vaccine – or where no alternative vaccine is available in a suitable timeframe or from a convenient location.

The Community Pharmacy Vaccination Service only offers the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine whereas the HSC Trust Vaccination Centres across the region offer the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, when stock is available. Appointment availability and queuing times can vary significantly across the various HSC Trust Vaccination Centres.

Also note:

Anyone of any age who has had a first dose of Astra Zeneca should proceed with their second dose of this same vaccine (unless they had an extreme adverse reaction to the first dose).
